Why do you need custom mouthguards?

While you can buy plastic mouthguards at your local drugstore or sporting goods store, these are generally ill-fitting and frequently out of position. Another option, the “boil-and-bite” mouthguards, are heated, softened and then bitten down on; these tend to be thin, easily lose their shape and are hard to keep in place.

Custom mouthguards are moulded to your teeth and form-fitted to stay in place. Because they fit securely over the teeth, they not only protect the teeth, they also allow for free breathing. We also choose the mouthguard material carefully, using appropriate materials for the most high-impact sports.

Because custom mouthguards are more comfortable, your child is more likely to wear them consistently and correctly – ultimately saving you the cost of repairing damaged teeth! We will re-evaluate the fit of the mouthguard as your child grows and the position of the teeth and jaws change. Woodcreek Dental Care provides custom mouthguards in Calgary.

Mouthguards for Adults

Adults also benefit from wearing mouthguards while participating in contact sports, while having orthodontic treatment or if they tend to grind their teeth. Custom mouthguards are made from durable materials which will last longer than the store-bought kind and will not need to be replaced frequently.

Caring for Your Mouthguard

Rinse your mouthguard in cold, soapy water and keep it dry, clean and secure from your other equipment. If any odour develops, you can also rinse your mouthguard in mouthwash. Do not expose your mouthguard to extreme heat by soaking it in hot water or leaving it in hot car or in direct sunlight. Heat can cause the shape of the mouthguard to distort and affect its fit and comfort.
