Stains from food and drink can darken teeth over time, usually resulting in a yellow or orange hue. Illness can discolor dentin, and heredity or environmental factors can discolor both dentin and enamel. These are common things that will cause your smile to be less white:
- Frequent coffee, tea, cola
- Atibiotics may darken teeth in children
- Aging – the dentin under the enamel of a tooth gradually darkens with age
- Tobacco use
- Wine
- Injury causing damage to the tooth nerve
We can provide solutions to make your teeth white and give you the fresh, beautiful smile that you deserve. There are a few options for this procedure. We will be happy to discuss these with you so you understand the difference between the procedures, but primarily the differences are time commitment and degree of whiteness that can be achieved.
ZOOM!
The ZOOM! chairside whitening system is a scientifically advanced tooth whithening procedure. It is safe, effective and fast, very fast. in just 45 minutes your teeth will become dramatically whiter. the convenience of ZOOM! makes wearing trays or strips a thing of the past. this makes the perfect choice for the busy individual.
Hydrogen peroxide (H2/O2) gel – Use of a gentle oxygenating agent that penetrates the enamel and breaks up stain deposits lodged in your tooth structure and then carries away the debris.
Carbamide peroxide gel (1 visit in-office; 2-3 wkd home) – Use of a milder oxygenating agent that penetrates the enamel and breaks up deposits lodged in your tooth. This power whitening procedure requires less time - just one visit. The professionally designed trays will conform closely to the natural contours of your teeth; comfortable. Superior result. 1.5 hr procedure.
Porcelain veneers (3 visits) – We adhere a thin veneer to your natural tooth to create the perfect tooth. This is the most effective method of tooth whitening because porcelain resists staining, therefore the results will last for many years.
Cautions against home peroxide application:
- Requires time, patience, commitment, caution, discomfort
- Overlaps soft tissue producing irritation; creates sensitivity
- Weak formulation; slow to whiten, less effective overall than professional procedures
- Stains return
How long does professional whitening last? Lightness should last from one to five years, depending on your personal habits such as smoking and drinking coffee and tea. At this point you may choose to get a touch up. This procedure may not be as costly because you can probably still use the same mouthguard. The retreatment time also is much shorter than the original treatment time.
How does it work? The active ingredient in most of the whitening agents is 10 percent carbamide peroxide (CH4N2O2), also known as urea peroxide; when water contacts this white crystal, the release of hydrogen peroxide lightens the teeth.
Is it safe? Any side effects? Several studies, during the past five years, have proven bleaching to be safe and effective. Some patients may experience slight gum irritation or tooth sensitivity, which will resolve when the treatment ends.
What are realistic expectations? No one can really predict how much lighter your teeth will become. Every case is different. Please ask your Woodcreek Dental Care team to show you a Shade guide and discuss ZOOM! whitening with you.
